Growth trends in production and sales in the automotive industry weakened slightly in August – new Quest economic report

The current growth trend in car production in Germany started at the beginning of 2014 and has been continuing since then. From the beginning of 2014 to August 2018, this growth trend is 2.1% per year. This is lower than the 2.8% annual growth in world automobile production between 2007 and 2017.

The Quest Trend Magazine records the trend as an average of the monthly production indices of the last 12 months published by the Federal Statistical Office.

In July, the production growth trend had still marked a new ten-year high. In August, however, the production index dropped to 83.8 index points down to the lower Bollinger Band. The Bollinger Bands comprise 67% of all deviations of production from the average of the last 12 months. Deviations in production remaining within the Bollinger Bands signal a normal situation and not a boom or crisis.

The growth trend in the sales of the automotive industry in Germany from the beginning of 2014 to August 2018 was 3.6% per annum. The growth trend in sales also reached a new ten-year high in July. As with production, the August value of sales is close to the lower Bollinger Band.

The economic report tracks production and sales of the automotive industry in Germany since 2008. This makes it possible to identify trends and their current characteristics.
