The Imaging Source Begins Series Production of Aptiris Autofocus Cameras and Adds New 8 MP Models

The Imaging Source, international manufacturer of machine vision cameras and industrial imaging software, announces the series production of its complete Aptiris USB 3.1 autofocus camera portfolio. Since the first models were introduced earlier this year, the series has been expanded with two additional 8.3 MP models featuring the onsemi AR0822 image sensor. All eight Aptiris models are now in series production.

Autofocus for Changing Working Distances
Designed for machine vision and embedded imaging applications where object or working distances can vary, Aptiris combines a compact industrial camera platform with software-controlled one-push autofocus. A motorized M12 lens mount enables the camera to adjust focus without manual intervention, helping maintain sharp, repeatable image acquisition in applications where fixed-focus optics are impractical.

The Aptiris portfolio now spans 5 MP to 19.7 MP and includes both rolling- and global-shutter sensor options for different imaging requirements:

·        AR0521 (5 MP): 2592 × 1944 resolution, 60 fps, rolling shutter, 1/2.5" optical format

·        IMX568 (5 MP): 2448 × 2048 resolution, 74 fps, global shutter, 1/1.8" optical format

·        AR0822 (8.3 MP): 3840 × 2160 resolution, 45 fps, rolling shutter, 1/1.8" optical format

·        AR2020 (19.7 MP): 5120 × 3840 resolution, 19 fps, rolling shutter, 1/1.8" optical format

The newly added onsemi AR0822 extends the series with an 8.3 MP option based on a 1/1.8" stacked BSI CMOS sensor. Its 3840 × 2160 resolution, high dynamic range, and strong low-light performance make it particularly well suited for applications requiring detailed image acquisition under changing illumination and working conditions.

Compact USB 3.1 Platform for Easy Integration

Across the series, Aptiris combines autofocus functionality with a compact 36 × 36 × 33.8 mm housing and a USB 3.1 Type-C interface. Support for both USB3 Vision and UVC (USB Video Class) facilitates integration across industrial PCs, embedded systems, and heterogeneous vision environments.

Additional platform features include:

·        USB 3.1 (USB Type-C) with power over USB

·        Motorized M12 lens mount

·        Software-controlled one-push autofocus

·        Autofocus total stroke of 1.3 mm

·        Stepping rotation of 12.5 µm/step

·        I/O trigger

·        Compact 36 × 36 × 33.8 mm form factor

The combination of compact dimensions, USB connectivity, and integrated autofocus allows developers to reduce the mechanical complexity associated with adjustable-focus imaging while maintaining the flexibility required for applications such as automation, inspection, medical and laboratory imaging, smart logistics, and compact embedded vision systems.

“Moving the first Aptiris models into series production marks an important step in establishing the platform as our next-generation autofocus camera family,” said Momchil Binev, Senior Product Manager at The Imaging Source. “With the addition of the AR0822, we are also broadening the range of sensor options available to developers. This gives customers more flexibility to match autofocus capability with the resolution, shutter technology, and imaging characteristics required by their application.”
