Maxell, Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Keiji Nakamura; hereinafter “Maxell”) will begin shipping samples for functionality evaluation of the “M Type (Magnetic Type)” (hereinafter “M Type”), which has been developed as EMC countermeasure components for high-frequency bands. Samples will be available in April 2026.

In recent years, there have been an increasing number of cases where noises emitted from electronic devices and connecting cables have affected the normal operation of devices and wireless communications. Particularly, as the frequency bands utilized expand from the megahertz range to the gigahertz range, the importance of high-frequency noise countermeasures is growing. Maxell has been developing next-generation EMC countermeasure components by utilizing magnetic material development technology, fine particle dispersion technology, high-precision coating technology, and lamination process technology that have been cultivated since its founding through magnetic tapes such as cassette tapes and computer tapes.

“M Type” is a magnetic noise suppression thin film that utilizes magnetic powder dispersion technology and wet coating technology and is compatible with high frequency bands from several hundred megahertz to several tens of gigahertz. It contributes to the suppression of noise generated around noise sources such as cables, ICs, circuit boards, and connectors used in electronic devices such as PCs and smartphones, medical equipment, communication devices, and automotive electronic systems.

The samples will be available for functionality evaluation purposes, with customization options for frequency bands, shapes (sheet/tape), widths, lengths, and more. “M Type” achieves both magnetic noise suppression and a thin, lightweight design. Through coating film design and coating processing technology that reduces cracking and powder shedding during bending, it possesses flexibility capable of withstanding bending to a diameter of 1 millimeter with a thickness of approximately 60 micrometers. In addition, it is possible to further improve electric field shielding performance by combining it with a metal film.

Maxell will continue to provide solutions that support an advanced information society through the development of EMC countermeasure components that leverage its long-standing knowledge of magnetic materials and its unique “Analog Core Technologies,” such as fine particle mixing/dispersion technology and fine coating technology.

Kyocera Corporation (President: Hideo Tanimoto; “Kyocera”) and Maxell, Ltd. (President: Keiji Nakamura; “Maxell”) started running test operations as of December 2025, installing power modules utilizing Maxell’s all‑solid‑state battery “PSB401010H” in industrial robots and controllers at Kyocera’s Kagoshima Sendai Plant, one of its semiconductor ceramic package production sites.

The ceramic‑packaged all‑solid‑state batteries produced by Maxell feature high reliability*1, and their exterior housings adopt ceramic packages manufactured by Kyocera. With its superior heat resistance and hermeticity*2, this package contributes to the high reliability*1 of all‑solid‑state batteries, exceeding that of conventional batteries using liquid electrolytes.

In the manufacturing processes of industrial products, the majority of industrial robots use power modules equipped with primary (non‑rechargeable) batteries for memory retention during power outages and for real‑time clock (RTC) functions to support factory automation. Power modules that use primary batteries generally require replacement every one to two years, and the used batteries become industrial waste each time.

Replacing primary batteries with a rechargeable all-solid-state battery PSB401010H provides over 10 years of service life, reduces battery replacements and waste, and maintains high safety*1 even in harsh manufacturing environments.

Based on test operations conducted at its factories, Kyocera will consider introducing technologies that further reduce maintenance requirements and lower environmental impact at its manufacturing sites.

Leveraging its analog core technologies, Maxell will continue to advance the development of high‑performance and highly reliable all‑solid‑state batteries and modules along Four Key axes—high reliability, high heat resistance, high output, and large power supply capacity—targeting not only existing applications but also new application areas where conventional batteries could not be used, with the aim of addressing a wide range of societal challenges.

Kyocera and Maxell will further strengthen their cooperation in the field of all‑solid‑state batteries and related technologies, contributing to the resolution of societal challenges in a broad range of applications, including industrial uses.

Maxell, Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Keiji Nakamura; hereinafter “Maxell”) has developed　an all-solid-state battery power module which matches the same size and output voltage as a lithium thionyl chloride battery (ER battery).

ER batteries are widely used in industrial equipment backup systems, smart meters, and IoT sensors.

However, since they are primary (non-rechargeable) batteries, regular battery replacement is required, which increases maintenance workload and leads to the challenge of increasing waste batteries.

This module features a circuit designed to match the output voltage (3.6 V) of ER batteries, housed in standard ER battery size-compatible casing (diameter 17.9 mm, height 50 mm), enabling easy adoption even for users currently using ER batteries. It incorporates eight mass-produced “PSB401010H” all-solid-state batteries to provide approximately a capacity of 35 mAh, with the charging circuit (charging at 5 V) integrated within the module.

By adopting this module as a backup power source for industrial equipment, battery replacement frequency is reduced, leading to decreased maintenance time and increased operating hours, thereby improving productivity. Furthermore, it also contributes to minimizing environmental impact by reducing the amount of waste batteries.

This all-solid-state battery power module will be exhibited and demonstrated at “AUTOMOTIVE WORLD 2026” held at Tokyo Big Sight from Wednesday, January 21 to Friday, January 23 (venue: Tokyo Big Sight, West Hall 2, Booth No. W10-73).

Maxell is advancing the development of all-solid-state batteries with high-performance and high reliability, that can be applied to areas where existing batteries cannot be used, focusing on four key features: high reliability, high heat resistance, high output, and large capacity. In addition, Maxell is developing modules that combine all-solid-state batteries with wireless power transfer and energy harvesting technologies, contributing to solving social challenges and realizing a sustainable society.

Maxell, Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Keiji Nakamura; hereinafter “Maxell”) has developed the “PSB2032”, a coin type all-solid-state battery suitable for use as the main power source for IoT devices. Samples will be available in late December.

In infrastructure facilities and factories, significant labor is required for monitoring the operational status of equipment and performing maintenance work on such equipment.

However, with the recent decline in the labor force, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain conventional practices. To improve the situation, there is a growing demand for automation and efficiency improvement through IoT and AI technologies. As a result, the adoption of IoT sensor devices equipped with communication functions that allow for continuous monitoring of equipment and facility conditions over extended periods without requiring human effort is progressing, along with the demand for power sources that offer greater capacity and higher reliability.

To meet these market needs, Maxell has newly developed the “PSB2032”, a coin type all-solid-state battery designed to be suitable as the main power source for IoT devices. The battery features 20 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm in height.

Since developing coin type all-solid-state battery in 2019, Maxell has been advancing research and development of all-solid-state batteries of various types, including ceramic package type, bipolar type, and cylindrical type. The newly developed “PSB2032” delivers a capacity of 35 mAh – approximately four times that of the ceramic- packaged “PSB401010H” currently in mass production, making it suitable for use as the main power source for IoT devices.

The “PSB2032” incorporates key features of Maxell’s all-solid-state batteries, such as a wide discharge temperature range, high reliability, and high safety*1, while maintaining the high sealing capability*2 equivalent to ceramic-packaged models. In addition, while the “PSB401010H” is suitable for reflow mounting, the “PSB2032” samples come pre-equipped with connection terminals*3suitable for mounting into small-sized devices, enabling Maxell’s all-solid-state batteries to accommodate different mounting methods.

*1 Key features of Maxell’s all-solid-state batteries: High reliability, high heat resistance, high output, and large capacity. Please visit Maxell’s all-solid-state battery webpage for details.

Maxell, Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Keiji Nakamura / hereinafter “Maxell”) will start in September the sales for both the power modules and the energy harvesting-compatible evaluation kits, which utilize the all-solid-state batteries “PSB401010H” as the power source.

The all-solid-state battery “PSB401010H” currently mass-produced by Maxell features a wide discharge temperature range, high reliability, large capacity and output, and high safety*1.

In recent days, labor shortages have long posed a significant challenge in reducing the manpower required to monitor manufacturing equipment and infrastructure. As one possible solution, the use of IoT devices combined with energy harvesting technology has been under consideration. Our customers have also expressed a need to easily evaluate the highly reliable and long-life all-solid-state batteries to store energy-harvested power in such IoT devices.

To meet such needs, Maxell co-developed with the ROHM group the “Energy Harvesting-Compatible Evaluation Kit” in July 2023*2, using ROHM Co., Ltd.’s charging control IC for energy harvesting and a boost DC-DC converter IC equipped with ultra-low power consumption technology “Nano Energy”.

Meanwhile, we have also received requests from customers who wish to utilize the unique features of the all-solid-state battery as a main power source*3 or for long-term backup power. To meet these needs, it was necessary to increase the battery capacity.

To address this need, Maxell developed the “All-Solid-State Battery Power Module” in November 2024*4, which can be equipped with up to five all-solid-state batteries, making it suitable for applications requiring larger capacity.

This module comes pre-integrated with charging and boosting circuits, eliminating the need for dedicated circuit design and allowing for easy integration into existing systems.

Furthermore, this module is capable of discharging at temperatures of up to 125°C, enabling it to support a broader range of applications.

By providing these products to companies considering the adoption of all-solid-state battery power sources, Maxell believes it will streamline evaluation process and ultimately lead to the expansion of applications for all-solid-state batteries.

Maxell will continue to utilize analog core technology to solve many social issues, and we will proceed with the development of all-solid-state batteries and modules, leveraging four key features*5: a wide discharge temperature range, high reliability, high capacity and high output, and high safety, to be applicable in areas not usable with existing batteries.

The power modules utilizing the ceramic-packaged all-solid-state batteries, “PSB401010H,” manufactured by Maxell, Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Keiji Nakamura / hereinafter “Maxell”) have been installed as the power sources in the industrial robots and the controllers of Subaru Corporation (Representative Director, President and CEO: Atsushi Osaki / hereinafter “Subaru”), and test operations began at the Oizumi Plant, Subaru’s engine and transmission production site in the Gunma Manufacturing Facility, in August.

With the test operations at Subaru as a starting point, Maxell aims to expand the application of its all-solid-state battery modules to Subaru and other manufacturing companies.

In the automobile manufacturing process, industrial robots typically use primary batteries (single-use type) to provide power backup for memory and real-time clocks (RTCs) in the event of power outages. These primary batteries generally require replacement every 1 to 2 years, leading to disposal as industrial waste.

Maxell has developed an all-solid-state battery power module utilizing the ceramic-packaged all-solid-state batteries, PSB401010H, rechargeable batteries that can be used repeatedly as power sources even in the harsh manufacturing environment. By operating equipment with these all-solid-state battery power modules, which are expected to have a battery life exceeding 10 years with high safety*2, it becomes possible to reduce the labor required for

battery replacement in industrial robots, PLC*3s, etc., as well as to reduce the disposal of used batteries.

By installing Maxell’s all-solid-state batteries in the industrial robots used at the Oizumi Plant in Subaru’s Gunma Manufacturing Facility, it is expected that industrial waste and battery replacement work will be reduced, by taking advantage of the batteries’ long battery life of more than 10 years.

To address various social issues, Maxell will continue to leverage its Analog Core Technologies to develop reliable, high-performance all-solid-state batteries and modules for applications in the areas where existing batteries cannot be used, focusing on four key features: long lifetime, high heat resistance, high output, and high capacity.

Maxell, Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Keiji Nakamura / hereinafter “Maxell”) has elucidated the mechanism of capacity degradation of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries, which are now gaining attention as a key next-generation battery technology.

All-solid-state batteries are theoretically expected to have a long lifetime, and be easily to predict their lifetimes. However, to achieve a long lifetime, it is important to elucidate the capacity degradation mechanism and predict the battery lifetime based on that.

Maxell’s detailed analysis of the capacity degradation mechanism of all-solid-state batteries has elucidated that their materials themselves hardly degrade, and that the main cause of the capacity reduction is the SOC (State of Charge) imbalance*1 between the electrodes. Additionally, the experiments using symmetric cells*2 have successfully quantified the electrode-specific side-reaction rate, demonstrating that the side-reaction current in all-solid-state batteries is more than one order of magnitude lower than that in liquid-based batteries. In other words, it has become clear that the inherently superior lifetime characteristics of all-solid-state batteries can be attributed to the extremely low side-reaction current in the electrodes.

Furthermore, in all-solid-state batteries, crosstalk reactions*3 generally observed in liquid electrolytes are not present even at 105°C, and it has been elucidated that only the material-specific side-reaction current needs to be considered when estimating the side-reaction rate. This suggests that lifetime prediction for all-solid-state batteries may be easier than those for conventional liquid-based lithium-ion batteries.

In this study, the capacity degradation mechanism of all-solid-state batteries has been elucidated, and we have conducted a velocity logical analysis of the rate of capacity reduction. These results will pave the way for quantitative and theoretical lifetime predictions for all-solid-state batteries. As the byproducts of side-reactions become more evident, it is anticipated that the design of all-solid-state batteries with enhanced safety and reliability, based on lifetime predictions, will become feasible.
The results of this research have been published in the ‘Journal of Power Sources.’

Based on this technology, Maxell is continuing the development of all-solid-state batteries with a heat resistance up to 150°C. Furthermore, Maxell is advancing development for fields such as next-generation mobility including electric vehicles, energy storage systems for renewable energy, power supplies for IoT sensors for infrastructure monitoring, maintenance-free power supplies for industrial equipment, and specialized equipment used in extreme environments. Moving forward, Maxell will continue improving the performance of all-solid-state batteries and establishing mass production technologies for these products to contribute to a sustainable society.

*1 SOC (State of Charge) imbalance: A phenomenon in which the current efficiency of the battery reaction changes between the positive and negative electrodes due to decomposition reactions of the electrolyte or electrolyte materials occurring on the electrodes, resulting in a shift in the SOC utilization range of both electrodes.

*2 Symmetric cell: A basic validation cell composed of identical electrodes for the positive and negative sides.

*3 Crosstalk reactions: A phenomenon where byproducts of side-reactions generated on one electrode migrate to the counter electrode, increasing the reaction quantity at the counter electrode.

The breakthrough partnership will see Maxell’s all-solid-state battery power a next-generation medical sensor, a data logger designed to monitor the cleaning and disinfection processes within the medical industry.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the adoption of all-solid-state batteries within the European industrial sector, especially in the advancement in medical and industrial processes sensor monitoring, where extreme temperatures and harsh conditions challenge traditional battery solutions. The newest version of a wireless sensor monitoring solution, developed by microsensys, integrates Maxell’s PSB401010H all-solid-state battery, offering exceptional heat resistance and long-term reliability. This enables real-time data logging of critical disinfection parameters, ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical instrument cleaning processes.

Revolutionising Medical Disinfection and Industrial Process Monitoring

Maxell’s all-solid-state battery is uniquely suited for this application due to its ability to operate at temperatures up to 125°C, making it ideal for high-heat environments as required for top level performance medical cleaning. The PSB401010H battery, featuring a compact 10.5mm x 10.5mm x 4.0mm design and an 8mAh nominal capacity, delivers reliable, long-lasting power with minimal maintenance, even in demanding conditions.

By utilising this cutting-edge battery, microsensys’ new TELID® eco-series data logger can continuously record temperature, pressure, and other disinfection parameters with unmatched reliability. This ensures that hospitals, laboratories, and medical facilities can maintain stringent cleaning standards, improving patient safety and regulatory compliance.

A Major Step Forward for Solid-State Battery Adoption

This partnership underscores Maxell’s commitment to advancing energy storage solutions for critical applications. The ability of Maxell’s all-solid-state battery to power medical-grade sensors in extreme environments demonstrates its potential across the healthcare industry and beyond.

"Our all-solid-state battery technology is transforming industries where durability and reliability are paramount," said Stewart Smith, Senior Manager at Maxell Europe Ltd. "Partnering with microsensys to bring this innovation into medical disinfection monitoring is a milestone in ensuring safer, more efficient healthcare processes."

Microsensys also emphasized the significance of this partnership:

"In medical and industrial processes, reliability and safety are paramount, especially in extreme environments," said Sylvo Jäger, CEO at microsensys. "For our newest product series with outstanding sustainable parameters, we required a power source that could withstand sustained temperatures of at least 115°C. Maxell’s all-solid-state battery exceeded our expectations, operating safely up to 125°C. Its ceramic structure and solid electrolyte eliminates the risks of leakage, swelling or degradation, making it an ideal and far safer choice for medical applications. By integrating this advanced battery into our latest data logger, we are providing healthcare professionals with a maintenance-free, high-performance solution that ensures precise and secure disinfection monitoring."
